Recognition Day 2006

Acts of bravery, heroism and service were honored at the 26th Annual Recognition Day Awards Ceremony on April 25, 2006, at the Los Angeles Sports Arena.  More than 160 sworn and civilian employees, active and retired, received medals and awards before an audience of City leaders, Police Commissioners, Department Command Staff, family and friends.Chief_bratton

Chief Bratton presented the awards, with Commander Kenneth Garner serving as Master of Ceremonies.  Among the afternoon's highlights were humorous messages of inspiration and support by Former Los Angeles Dodgers manager and Hall of Fame inductee Tommy Lasorda, and CBS 2 Sports Director Jim Hill, a former NFL football player.

Of the incidents deemed award-worthy, 20 involved rescuing victims in life and death situations.  Including the rescue operations in response to the January 2005 Metrolink train derailment, caused by a suspect intentionally leaving his vehicle parked on the trains tracks.  While the events illustrated the kind of challenges officers face everyday, it should be noted that in six of these event, the LAPD employee was off-duty at the time, including one civilian Police Service Representative whose efforts successfully foiled a suicide attempt.Tommy_l
