Male Nurse Suspected of Molesting Patients

Nr06295

Los Angeles: Los Angeles detectives are asking  for the public's help identifying additional victims who may have been  molested by a certified nurse's assistant at a San Fernando Valley Hospital.

"We have reason to believe there may be other victims who have not come forward," said Detective Ninette Toosbuy of the West Valley Police Station.  "We're making the suspect's picture public with the expectation there are other victims.  We'd like any one with information to call us."

The investigation began when a 29-year-old woman reported to police that she had been sexually assaulted at the Tarzana Hospital on April 7, 2006.  Detective Toosbuy identified Ramon Eduardo Rodas Gaspar, 37, as a possible suspect.

Over the course of the investigation, Toosbuy found two more victims, one from January 2005, and another from April 2006.  The victim's ages ranged from 29 years to 64 years old.  All three were recovering from surgery in their hospital rooms when Gaspar allegedly assaulted them.

Faced with a warrant for his arrest, Gaspar surrendered himself with his lawyer to a judge at the Van Nuys courthouse on June 15, 2006.  He has been charged with three felony counts of sexual assault.

Tarzana Hospital is located at 18321 Clark Street, Los Angeles.

Gaspar has worked at the hospital since 2004.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Toosbuy at 818-374-7794.  On weekends and during off-hours, call the 24-hour toll free number at 1-877-LAWFULL (1-877-529-3855).

Youth Donates College Money to Officer Ripatti

Blanketed with community support, Southwest Area Officer Kristina Ripatti continues to recover at an undisclosed spinal rehabilitation facility.  An armed robber shot the 33-year-old officer June 3.

Since the incident, Officer Ripatti has enjoyed an outpouring of well wishes and donations.  Among the contributions was an $800 donation from a Southern California boy.  The 11-year-old boy donated what would have been money for his college education.

Though moved by the youth's altruistic gesture, Officer Ripatti wanted to return the money to ensure the boy attends college.  The boy's family, however, declined to take back the contribution.

At his parents' request, the boy's identity is being withheld.

Caper of the Week

Focusing on some of the most prolific criminals in the City, Northeast Area police officers and detectives slashed crime by 16 percent with the apprehension of four career criminals.Career_criminals_ne

The arrests-made over a two-week period-markedly decreased commercial and residential burglaries, mail fraud, identity and vehicle thefts, among other prevalent crimes in Northeast Area.

"The hard part is catching these offenders," said Captain Smith, at a press conference June 6.  "That's why we need the community's eyes and ears."

Captain Morris Smith said police officers and detectives concentrate on the perpetrators who comprise 10 percent of the criminal population in Northeast Area, but who commit 50 percent of the crime.

The number of stolen vehicles dropped from 99 to 22 with the apprehension of two of the four men arrested.  Northeast Area police officers and detectives recovered $150,000-worth of stolen property from these culprits.

Similarly, the apprehension of another career criminal resulted in a 33 percent decrease in residential burglaries.  The brazen burglar stole some $27,000 in property during daytime operations.  The man, who traded the stolen goods for drugs, admitted to targeting homes with open windows and doors.

The last criminal to comprise the four arrested stole mail from 200 people in communities including Highland Park, Echo Park, Downey, El Monte, Glendale, Hollywood, Monrovia, and Pasadena.

To avert victimization, Captain Smith advises that Angelenos "harden the target."  The idea is to discourage criminal acts by making it "harder" for criminals to strike.  For instance, Captain Smith recommends not leaving property exposed, locking doors and windows, and starting a neighborhood watch group.

"We need to keep guys like these in jail," Chief Bratton said.  "The more days they spend in jail, the less time they'll spend victimizing people."

Gunmen Kill 3 and Critically Wound 1-Update

Surviving victim's condition upgraded from Critical to Stable.

Los Angeles City Councilmembers are offering $75,000 in reward money.  The Los Angeles County Supervisors are offering $30,000, for a total reward of $105,000.  The reward is for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the shooting that occurred at the 1100 block of East 49th Street in South Los Angeles.

Robbery-Homicide Detectives are seeking the public's help with any information leading to the identification and apprehension of the person or persons responsible for the multiple shooting of two boys and two young men.

On Friday, June 30, 2006, at about 4:30 p.m., officers responded to a radio call regarding shots being fired in the 1100 block of East 49th Street, Los Angeles. When the officers arrived, they saw four male Hispanics lying on the sidewalk. Each of the victims had multiple gunshot wounds. The Los Angles Fire Department responded to treat the victims, but 10 year old David Marcial, 17 year old Luis Cervantes, and 22 year old Larry Marcial were all pronounced dead at the scene. The only surviving victim, 12 year old Sergio Marcial Jr. was rushed to a local hospital.  His condition has stabilized.  David and Sergio Jr. are the nephews of Larry Marcial.  Luis is a neighbor and family friend of the Marcials.

Preliminary witness information revealed that a large model, dark colored passenger vehicle was traveling on 49th Street and pulled up next to the victims who were gathered on the sidewalk. Two gunmen got out of the vehicle and began firing at the victims with rifles, hitting all four. The gunmen returned to the vehicle that was waiting for them and drove away from the scene westbound on 49th Street, then possibly northbound on Central Avenue.

The suspects remained at large and are described as two male Blacks, 18-20 years old. The description of a possible third suspect who stayed in the vehicle is uncertain.

There is still no clear motive for the crime, but detectives believe the attack was not motivated by race.
