Pitbull Attacks Smaller Dog

Los Angeles: A vicious pitbull attacking a smaller dog was shot today by an officer, after he also attacked a city worker.

On July 5, 2007, at about 9:00 a.m., Newton patrol officers responded to a radio call "Vicious Dog" in the 900 block of East 51st Street. When the officers arrived they saw the pitbull with its teeth around the neck of the smaller dog.  It appeared to onlookers and the officers that the pitbull was going to kill the smaller dog.  Citizens were attempting to separate the dogs by using sticks, but were unsuccessful.

The officers used a fire extinguisher and also sprayed the dogs with chemical spray but both did not have any effect on the pit bull.  Officer's feared that if the pit bull got loose that it would attack anyone of the many on lookers.  Police Officer Steven Crane with over 24 years with the department shot the pit bull once.  The pit bull immediately stopped and attempted to walk away but collapsed.  The injured small dog was taken by Animal Regulations and its condition is unknown.

The owners of the dogs have not been determined.

Newton Area Detectives are conducting the investigation.

On July 5, 2007, at about 12:40 PM, the victim, Royce Levine Hollingston, 35, was standing next to a parked car, talking to an elderly woman, in the 9800 block of South Maie Avenue.  At least two Black men in their 20s came around the street corner, and one of them pulled out a pistol and began shooting at the victim.  The victim attempted to run away from the gunmen and also away from the woman to avoid her being harmed.  Unfortunately the victim was struck by the gunfire and collapsed onto the sidewalk.  He was taken to a local hospital, but died a short time later as a result of gunshot wounds.

The woman escaped any injuries.  The motive for the shooting is currently unknown.

Man arrested after Fleeing from Police

Los Angles: On Sunday afternoon a Los Angeles man was arrested after fleeing from police.

On July 1, 2025 at about 2:30 PM, Hollywood Division officers responded to a possible "Theft Suspect" at a laundry mat located at 6707 Santa Monica Boulevard. The officers stopped a male, later identified as suspect Curtis Jackson, who was loitering in front of a 7-11 store in the same mini-mall as the laundry mat.  During their encounter, the suspect provided the officers with his identification.

When Officer Gallegos broadcast a warrant check on the suspect, Jackson spontaneously stated, "I got warrants" and ran away from the officers. A short foot pursuit ensued, resulting in Jackson and the officers on the ground.

While struggling with Jackson, using body weight and firm grips, Officer Gallegos inadvertently struck Jackson in the head with her police radio resulting in a Use of Force. The officers eventually gained control of Jackson and took him into custody.

It was later determined that Jackson was wanted on an outstanding felony and misdemeanor warrants.

Jackson was treated and released at a local hospital for minor contusions that were unrelated to the head strike.

Police Officer Ivana Gallegos, 36, 13 years with the Department and Police Officer Cory French, 24, 9 months with the Department.

Both officers received medical treatment for minor cuts, bruises and scratches and were later released.

Forced Investigation Division is handling the investigation.

Four Valley Senior Citizen Centers will be open for heat relief July 3rd and 4th

July 2, 2025 – Heat relief for the elderly, disabled, and other residents with health issues will be available on Tuesday, July 3 and Wednesday, July 4 from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. both days at four senior citizen centers in the San Fernando Valley operated by the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks.

The sites are: Canoga Park Senior Center, 7326 Jordan Ave, 818-340-2633; Sunland Senior Center, 8640 Fenwick St., 818-353-9571; Van Nuys-Sherman Oaks Senior Center (also known as the Bernardi Center), 5040 Van Nuys Blvd., 818-756-9146; and Robert M. Wilkinson Multipurpose Center, 8956 Vanalden Ave. in Northridge, 818-756-7741.

The effects of heat can quickly overcome even the healthiest people; the elderly, young children, those who are sick or have chronic health conditions, live alone, or are overweight are more likely to have problems when exposed to excessive heat. Each location will be kept cool and have bottled water available for the benefit of these people.

The facilities would ordinarily be closed for the holiday, but because record high temperatures are anticipated, they will be open to provide a place where people who are the most susceptible to the heat can go. The centers will be open regular hours on Thursday, July 5 at which time a determination will be made regarding continuation of the cooling station program.

The Department is guided by heat advisories from the Los Angeles City Fire Department (LAFD) and/or National Weather Service. People in the affected areas should remain inside, refrain from strenuous work or exercise during the hottest part of the day, and stay hydrated.
