The enforcement operation will concentrate its efforts at rail crossings and Right of Ways in the City of Los Angeles . Police Officers from the Los Angeles Police department will join with Special Agents from Union Pacific Police Department, Burlington Northern Santa Fe Police Department, Port Police and Long Beach Port Security. They will conduct selective grade crossing and trespasser enforcement operations between the hours of 0600-1130 hours. Briefing will be at 0530 hours at 19500 McFarland and Alameda Streets. The rail lines and grade crossings along this corridor, which is the Pacific Harbor Line, are used by Pacific Harbor Line, Union Pacific Freight and Burlington Northern Santa Fe train traffic.
This rail line is active 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The heavy daily load of vehicular traffic traversing these grade crossings is potentially hazardous and a cause of concern for safe railroad operations. With literally thousands of passenger cars and commercial trucks crossing this rail line each day, grade crossing violations are commonplace and collisions have occurred. Motorists who stop on the tracks or evade gate-crossing warnings may be the cause of a train-vehicle collision that will almost always result in serious injury or death and delay train and vehicle traffic for hours.
This selective enforcement operation will utilize Los Angeles Police Department, Union Pacific Police Department, Burlington Northern Santa Fe Police Department Port Police, and Long Beach Port Security each participating agency will be supervised by their own personnel.
This event is conducted Nationwide throughout the year in an effort to reduce Rail Incidents in our Nation.
