Man Shot in Front of a South LA Market Dies Later

Los Angeles: 30-year-old Jermaine Tillman was shot on Nov. 7 while he stood in front of a South Los Angeles business has died from his wounds, detectives said.

Someone inside a vehicle drove by and shot Tillman while he was standing in front of Young’s market located at 701 East Manchester Avenue about 5:45 p.m.  The victim was struck and collapsed in the parking lot.  He was rushed to a local hospital where he was placed on life support.  He died on Nov. 12.

Detectives believe that a man walked out of the store and entered a black or green two-door unidentified vehicle.  As the car was leaving, a gunman inside the vehicle pulled out a handgun and open fired on the victim.  The vehicle sped off and was last seen traveling north on Stanford Avenue near Manchester Avenue.

The shooting is gang related and the suspects remain at large.  Investigators have few leads and described the suspects only as African American.

Commercial Burglaries in Koreatown

Los Angeles:  The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) is asking for the public's help for information leading to the identification and arrest of a burglary crew targeting Koreatown businesses. 

On September 20, 2024 at around 11:45 p.m., three suspects forced their way into a commercial building in the 3500 block of West Olympic Boulevard. The burglary crew then used pry tools to break into individual office suites.  Once inside, the suspects ransacked the offices and made off with small hand held valuables including cash, jewelry and laptop computers.

Cameras caught some of the activity, including the suspects trying to avoid identification by covering their faces, wearing 'hoodies' or goggles, and blocking the cameras view by taping  paper over the lens.

Suspect #1 is a female Korean about 14 to 17 years old, with black hair, wearing gray tank top, dark colored pants.  She is about 5 feet to 5 feet 4 inches tall, 100 to 115 pounds. 

Suspect #2 is a female Black about 14 to 17 years old, with black hair, wearing a black t-shirt, blue jeans and black canvas shoes. She is about 5 feet to 5 feet 4 inches tall, about 100 to 120 pounds.

Suspect #3 three is a male Korean or Hispanic, between 14 to 17 years of age.  He has black hair and was wearing a white t-shirt. He is about 5 feet 2 inches to 5 feet 4 inches tall, about 115 to 150 pounds.
 
Business owners are encouraged to review their security plans and to keep money and other valuables in safes or secured locations and out of public view.  Employees can also help by keeping an eye out for suspicious persons and report anyone who could be "casing" the business.

West Valley Homicide Detectives are Asking for Your Help in Identifying a Kidnap Suspect

Los Angeles: Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) Detectives are asking for the public’s help in locating a man who kidnapped a 13 year-old as she was walking home from school.

On November 11, 2009, in the West Valley area, a 13-year-old female was walking home from school in the area of Magnolia Boulevard and Zelzah Avenue when a man jumped out of his parked vehicle and grabbed her as she passed.  As the man dragged the girl towards his car, the victim screamed and a struggle ensued.  The young girl managed to free herself and run away.  The suspect immediately ran back to his car and drove away from the scene.

The suspect was described as a 30 to 40-year-old heavy set male Hispanic with a shaved head.  He stands about five feet six inches tall and weighs around 200 pounds.  He was wearing a white oversized t-shirt and dark baggy shorts.  The suspect’s vehicle was possibly a white four door 1995 to 2005 GMC Yukon, with a possible partial license number of “4Y------“.  The vehicle had a broken right taillight.

$700,000 Grant Permits the Los Angeles Police Department to Begin a Special Traffic Enforcement Program

Los Angeles:  The California Office of Traffic Safety has awarded the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) a $700,000 grant to increase traffic enforcement and education which will ultimately lead to safer roadways.

The objective of the grant, which is titled "Speed Awareness and Motorcycle Safety (SAMS) Project," is to compliment current efforts to reduce the number of community members killed and injured in traffic collisions. 

For reference, motorcycle fatalities have been on the rise in California,increasing 175 percent statewide in the last decade, from 204 fatalities in 1998 to 560 fatalities in 2008.  Consequently, the grant will specifically focus on speed violations and motorcycle safety.  To achieve these objectives, the Department has developed the "Back the Trailer" program that will target speed violators and will increase motorcycle safety through enforcement operations. 

"This grant will undoubtedly assist the Department in making our roadways safer by reducing the speeds of motorists and by increasing motorcycle safety" said Captain Todd Chamberlain, Commanding Officer, Emergency Operations Division.

"Every driver and every motorcyclist must get back to the basics: drive sober, always drive or ride safely, buckle up and we will save lives.  It's just that simple," said Christopher J. Murphy, Director of the Office of Traffic Safety.  "This grant will help make Los Angeles just that much safer of a place to live and work."

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.  The program will begin during the month of November and continue through 2010.
