77th Area Officer Involved Shooting

Officers Confronted by Armed Suspect during Pedestrian Stop

Los Angeles: On March 3, 2025 shortly after 11:00 p.m. 77th Area Officers assigned to a crime suppression detail, were in the process of conducting a pedestrian stop, when the suspect drove up honking his car horn and screaming at the officers. The driver officer backed his car away from the suspect’s car.

The passenger officer moved away from the suspect and over to the driver side of the police vehicle with his partner. The suspect who had gotten out of his car, waved a semi-automatic hand gun at the officers and began screaming obscenities at the officers. The suspect put the handgun on the roof of his car then turned toward the officers and began walking toward them continuing to scream obscenities at them.

While this was happening, the passenger officer walked to the back of their police car, armed himself with his police rifle and repositioned himself behind the passenger door. The suspect began walking toward the passenger officer, who, continued to order the suspect to stop. The suspect then reached for his waistband, and the passenger officer fired his weapon striking the suspect several times in the upper torso. The suspect was taken into custody.  

The officers immediately requested medical assistance. LAFD personnel responded and pronounced the suspect dead at the scene.

One semi-automatic handgun was recovered at the scene. The investigation is ongoing.

The investigation will ultimately be reviewed by the Chief of Police, the Office of the Inspector General and Board of Police Commissioners for compliance with the Department’s use-of-force policy which states that an officer’s use of force actions must be objectively reasonable.  Additionally, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Justice System Integrity Division will conduct a comprehensive review of the facts of the officer-involved shooting.

Missing College Student

Los Angeles:  The family of Cristian Sanchez and the Los Angeles Police Department requests the public’s assistance in helping to find him.

On January 17, 2011, Sanchez was last seen by his family in the 8000 block of Cimarron Street in the City of Los Angeles.  Sanchez had contact with the Oceanside Police Department on January 24, 2011, and was possibly heading to San Diego.  Sanchez’s family believes he may have returned to the Los Angeles area since that time period.

Sanchez is a college student and has not returned to school.  He has not contacted his friends or family.  Sanchez has never gone missing before and his family is very concerned.  He does not have any identification with him and may be in need of medical assistance.

Sanchez is a 20- year-old Hispanic male, with black hair, brown eyes, 5 feet 6 inches tall, and weighs about 120 pounds.  A photo of Sanchez is attached to the second page of this news release.

The LAPD has been notified by Martynov’s family that Martynov has contacted them and is doing fine and is in good condition.

Los Angeles:  The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) and the family of Ilya Martynov are asking for the public’s help in finding the 18-year-old man.

On February 24, 2011, at about 4 p.m., Martynov was last seen by his family in the 3200 block of Oakhurst Street in LAPD’s West Los Angeles area.  According to detectives, he told his mother that he was going to the bank and never returned home.  He has not been in contact with his family and he has also missed his school and work obligation which is very out of character for him.  His family is extremely concerned for his wellbeing.

Martynov is a male White of Russian descent with blonde hair and grey eyes.  He stands about six feet and one inch tall and weighs about 175 pounds.  He was last seen wearing a black jacket and black shoes.  He has a small birthmark on his right hand and another birthmark on left cheek.  Martynov is also known to frequent the areas of Cedar Sinai Hospital and Santa Monica City College.

City of Los Angeles Calls on Congress to Pass Ban on Large Capacity Ammunition Magazines

Los Angeles: March 2, 2011, Chief Charlie Beck joined Los Angeles City Council President Eric Garcetti, City Councilmember Paul Koretz and City Attorney Carmen Trutanich to call on Congress to pass Bill H.R. 308, banning large capacity ammunition magazines. During the news conference City officials announced the City of Los Angeles officially supports passage of H.R. 308 proposed by Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy, which would ban ammunition magazines that hold more than 10 rounds.

 “There is no reason why a peaceful society based on rule of law needs a citizenry armed with 30 round magazines”, stated Chief Charlie Beck who supports the Federal Legislature Bill. He further explained the Los Angeles Police Department is responsible for patrolling 470 square miles and protecting a population of almost 4 million people. Even though in the past few years crime has declined significantly, large capacity ammunition magazines are still being used by violent individuals.

Large capacity magazines were initially banded in 1994 as part of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act. The ban expired in 2004 as Congress failed to renew it. Recently a tragic event took place in Arizona where a large capacity ammunition magazine was used by a gunman, allowing him to fire more than 30 bullets in 15 seconds. The incident left 6 people dead and 13 wounded.

 

Man Shot Dead

Los Angeles:   The Los Angeles Police Department Newton detectives are asking for the public’s help to identify and locate the suspects responsible for gunning down 44-year-old Roderick Brumfield.

On Tuesday, March 1, 2010, around 10:20 p.m., Newton Area patrol officers responded to a radio call of an “Ambulance Shooting” at the 5300 block of South Broadway.  When officers arrived they were directed to an upstairs apartment where they found victim Brumfield suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded to the location and pronounced Brumfield dead at the scene.

The suspects are described as male Blacks who ran on foot from the location with no further description.  It is unclear if this incident is gang related.

Notes from the March 1, 2025 Weekly Police Commission Meeting

•    Police Commissioner Robert Saltzman said he was able to observe first-hand the work that went into policing the Academy Awards which were held this past Sunday.  He added he was very impressed with the intra-agency communication and the professionalism of everyone involved.

•    Assistant Chief Earl Paysinger informed the Board the deployment for the Academy Awards came off very well.  He said it has been a difficult last few weeks in regards to schedule and commended the rank and file officers for a job well done.

•    The Department’s report, dated December 8, 2010, and Inspector General’s report, dated February 24, 2011, relative to the Department’s Quarterly Discipline Report for the third quarter of 2010, as given by Inspector General Nicole Bershon, was approved.  Ms. Bershon said the over-all quality of the report was appropriate.  The main issue she had was with the lack of guidelines to distinguish the difference between an Official Reprimand and a Conditional Official Reprimand.  The Board ordered the Department to return in 45 days to update them on the status of the guidelines.

•    The Department’s report, dated January 26, 2011, relative to status report of Department audit and inspection plan – third quarter, fiscal year 2010/2011, was approved.

Jewelry Store Burglarized of Millions of Dollars Worth of Jewels

Los Angeles.  Central Area detectives are asking for the publics help in identifying two masked gunmen who burglarized a downtown jewelry store, making off with a multi-million-dollar haul.

On Feb. 19, 2011, between the hours of 7:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., a pair of burglars broke into a building in the 600 block of South Broadway and tunneled their way into a jewelry store. Once inside, the suspects went through the store, methodically emptying the display cases of high- quality jewelry.

Video images of the suspects indicate they were men wearing masks, gloves and carrying backpacks. Anyone who recognizes the suspects or their voices is asked to contact investigators.

It appears the suspects may have had knowledge of the building and were able to successfully tunnel in to the specific jewelry store. Detectives believe the estimated value of the take was in excess of $3 million.

Elderly Man Seriously Hurt During Hit-and-Run Incident

Today, District 3 Los Angeles City Councilman Dennis Zine and LAPD Valley Traffic Division personnel held a press conference to offer a $50,000 reward for information that would lead to the arrest of the hit-and-run suspect who killed 92-year-old Jafar Amirshahida.  Family members of the victim were also in attendance at the press conference to honor the memory of Amirshahida and support the councilman’s motion.  Also, please note that some details in the original release below were incorrect or incomplete. Updated details are as follows: The victim was crossing Reseda Boulevard at Victory Boulevard and was in a marked crosswalk on Reseda Boulevard when he was struck. Additionally, the victim died from his injuries at the hospital.      


Los Angeles:  Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) Valley Traffic Division (VTD) detectives investigating a recent hit-and-run incident are asking for anyone who may have witnessed the tragic event to provide them with whatever details they can.

Yesterday at about 6:08 pm, a 92-year-old man from Reseda was critically injured by a hit-and- run driver while crossing Victory Boulevard at Reseda Boulevard.  The pedestrian was in a marked crosswalk walking across westbound lanes on Victory Boulevard when a vehicle on Victory Boulevard struck him and then failed to stop and render aid as required by law.

Witnesses described the suspect’s car as a dark-colored, four-door sedan making a left turn from eastbound Victory Boulevard to northbound Reseda Boulevard when the incident occurred.  The elderly victim was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. At this time, his identity is being withheld until family members are notified.

LAPD Central Area In-Custody Death

Los Angeles: LAPD Force Investigation Division is investigating an in-custody death that occurred in Downtown Los Angeles.

On February 24, 2011, at about 8:20 p.m., LAPD Central Area patrol officers, along with a supervisor, responded to a gun assault call at a business in the 600 block of South San Julian.  When the officers arrived, they saw four men who appeared to be struggling with a man.  The four men were employees at the business.  In order to subdue the man, officers used body weight, punches and a TASER numerous times.  The officers also had to use three hobble restraints to control the man.  Two restraints were used to control the suspect’s elbows and one was used to for his legs.   

After subduing the suspect, officers carried the man to a waiting LAFD ambulance nearby.  He was then transported to Los Angeles County Hospital (USCMC) where he was pronounced dead.

The TASER or Electronic Control Device has been used by the Department since the early 1980. Since August 2007, the LAPD has been using the TASER model X-26.  Officers receive four hours of TASER training and over 25 hours of use-of-force training. During the training process employees experience firsthand the effects of the device.  Officers are trained to use the device when a person’s actions could cause serious injury to officers and others.  Officers who were involved in the incident are as follows:
