What an honor it was to have the Los Angeles Police Department Mounted Platoon making their first appearance in the 123rd 2012 Tournament of Rose Parade in Pasadena California. Along with the mounted platoon were the LAPD Honor Guard and the LAPD Emerald Society. The 11 member cavalry paraded down Colorado Boulevard proudly representing one of our most recognizable traditions.
The mounted platoon was established in 1987 as a component of the elite Metropolitan Division. Their mission is to assist in crime fighting, crime control and community relations. The Los Angeles Police Department Honor Guard was formed in 1979 and was established to provide honors for officers killed in the line of duty. The Emerald society was founded in 1992 with the objective of fostering goodwill among the members of the numerous law enforcement officers. Chief Charlie Beck led the platoon riding on a white Appaloosa named white water.
