On Thursday December 5, 2013, Chief of Police Charlie Beck held his monthly media availability at the Elysian Park Police Academy to discuss several topics with members of the press. Chief Beck provided crime statistics, discussed recruitment efforts and unveiled the 2014 Voice for the Animals Calendar which features LAPD officers and their rescued and adopted dogs. Proceeds from the sale of calendars will go to medical treatment, food, and shelter of abandoned animals in need. Chief Beck reminded holiday shoppers about the Department’s Lock it, Hide it, Keep it campaign developed to address property crime in the City. Chief Beck introduced the Secor brothers who are LAPD officers. Ryan is with Van Nuys Division; Joel is at Newton; Seth is at Rampart, and Micah, is assigned to the 77th Division. Chief Beck left Micha’s graduation ceremony early as he was called to the shooting at LAX on November 1, 2013, and missed having a picture taken with all four brothers.
Chief Beck announced the details of the Gun Buy Back that will be held on Saturday December 14, 2013, and the three locations people can drop off a gun, no questions asked, in exchange for a gift card. Chief Beck asked for the public’s help in finding the persons responsible for the tragic homicide of a 7 year old boy that has shocked the community and the LAPD.
