• The Department’s verbal report and discussion regarding the status of the Predictive Policing Project was given by Captain Sean Malinowski. Captain Malinowski informed the Board the Department was the second law enforcement agency to activate predictive policing which aims to predict when and where crimes will occur. Working with mathematicians at UCLA, Captain Malinowski said they developed an algorithm which divides the City into a series of 500 ft x 500 ft square boxes. Officers are assigned 10-20 boxes within a division to focus on. Focusing on the top 10-15 boxes within a division for 50-70 per week has yielded a difference in the reduction of crime. The crimes focused on are auto theft, burglary, and burglary theft from motor vehicles.
