The first-ever Aguas Frescas event was held in Highland Park on July 8, 2015, at York Park from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Around 100 people attended the festive gathering to interact with Northeast Area officers.
The event’s purpose was to create a fun, affable environment where community members and officers could chat and create a dialogue. Features included food, music and raffles with a variety of prizes, including bikes and Dodger tickets. Residents of several neighborhoods were in attendance from Highland Park, Glassell Park, Eagle Rock and Lincoln Park. Even an Anaheim Police Department officer stopped by to check out the event.
Monica Alcaraz, president of the Highland Park Neighborhood Council, was the driving force behind Aguas Frescas and hopes it will become an annual tradition. She acknowledges many organizations and people who helped make the event possible, such as District 14 Los Angeles City Councilmember José Huizar and his staff, and donations from Target Corporation, the Los Angeles Dodgers, Crispy Crust Pizza and others. “This event really provided an informal venue for our residents to get to know our local officers, and people were very happy for that opportunity,” said Ms. Alcaraz. “I also want to mention Officer Lloyd Chang [of the Northeast Area Community Relations Office]; he was chatting it up with everyone!”
