A new program aimed at students and LAPD Cadets is underway to mentor youth who want to develop their communication skills in the fields of writing, journalism, public speaking, police administration and more.
Cub Reporter tasks are designed to enhance communication abilities through a hands-on approach in which participants will devise ideas for media-worthy stories and events (a process known as “pitching” in professional public relations) and then share their concepts for approval with LAPD Media Relations Section (MRS) personnel. Once approved, the cub reporters will compose essential news releases and advisories for dissemination to the media and handle other arrangements as needed if they’re organizing an event. Topics for news releases and events could include LAPD Cadet activities, citywide youth programs like Summer Night Lights, LAPD recruitment, area scholarships, job opportunities, public safety and more.
Program participants will work one weekend day, most likely during summer months or when regular school classes are out of session, at the downtown MRS office in LAPD’s administration building at First and Main Streets. The MRS office is a professional environment, and cub reporters will be expected to wear their cadet uniforms or business attire. They should also come prepared with pens and pencils, notebooks and related materials.
For more information and/or to arrange participation, calls should be directed to MRS Officer Jack Richter at (213) 486-5910 or (951) 532-5766.
