Month-Long Observance Honors Police

In May, the Los Angeles Police Department will honor law enforcement officers across the country with a number of commemorative events during National Police Month.  The annual remembrance culminates during National Police Week- observed the third week in May- with a tribute to our nation’s fallen heroes on May 15, recognized as National Peace Officers’ Memorial Day.

President John F. Kennedy decreed the date in 1962, as a show of gratitude and pride for the valor, commitment and self-sacrifice demonstrated by officers killed in the line of duty. On this day, as directed by public law, government buildings display the American flag at half-staff. The Department will pay homage to our fallen heroes.

Happy Police Week to all active duty and retired LAPD officers and to all officers everywhere. This is the one time during the year when officers get the recognition they deserve for doing what is normally a thankless job. I don't live in L.A. but I am a frequent visitor. I always feel very safe when I visit and am constantly impressed with the professionalism exhibited by the L.A.P.D. Most recently during the marathon where I saw cops everywhere. I was most impressed by the explorers that helped close down the streets. Nice to see young people volunteering. Also, at Fiesta Broadway the LAPD was everywhere making for a fun and safe day.

I have also had an opportunity to work for 2 retired L.A.P.D. officers, 2 of the greatest people I have ever known. I learned a lot from them. The L.A.P.D. is just a great organization all the way around. Thanks to all of you for all that you do.
