19 more homicides to go and the LAPD will have eclipsed last years numbers.

Homicides are the true tally for crime. Like the late great NYPD Lt. Jack Maple said, 'there's no special police morgue to hide the bodies'.

-Maple was one of the originators of Compstat-

PS: Violent crime is up, morale is down. What are you going to do about it Chief?

What is the key to reducing homicides (such as in LA and NYC)?
And can it only be done when rates are at critical levels? (Fair enough to say that any amount is critical).

Also, how can another 19 homicides eclipse last years fugure??

HappyCop really needs to learn how to read these stats. They are compared year to date. The total number of homicides in all of 2005 was 486.

Happy Cop, you are certainly not that. You do not speak for the entire LAPD. Your morale may be down but instead of doing something about it you just whine. Is the Department responsible for your happiness or do you take some responsibility for it? You sound like you would actually take pleasure in more people dying. Why not respect all of the hardworking men and women of the LAPD for the good work they are doing!

Looks like our current Chief has the same attitude about moral as parks did, not his problem! Time will tell, one Chief or 9000 officers, looks simple enough to me.

May we all be thankful that grumpy cop has yet to grace us with his commentary on this blog.

Violent crime is up, morale is down. What are you going to do about it Chief?

Thats my rebuttal!

HappyCop,

You seem to be linking your belief that morale is down to your faulty premise that violent crime is up. Since the stats show that violent crime is slightly down (1% overall), then can we safely assume that morale is a little bit up?

Police Girl, if want to find out about morale, ask the lads being brought to the gallows at the Burnbury Building.

Better yet, get the LAPPL's Treasurer's report and see the amount of money that is being spent for the lawyers that are trying to unscrew many cop's careers.

Keep drinking the Kool-Aid and turning a blind eye to the morale problem. You sound like you would be a great Chief!

Bottoms up.

The Dept is always about numbers, and for the anyone with low morale or has a beef with the way we do it, there's always the back door (turn in your badge, gun, and don't forget the Dept's plastic flashlight) because for you the grass will be greener on the other side.

policegirl,

Well said. Accurately interpreting the crime stats, you subtly out-witted the egregious conclusion of a struggling statistician, while boosting our flagging morale.
