LAPD Statement Regarding Public Safety

Los Angeles: The Los Angeles Police Department is committed to serving our communities while protecting the rights of all persons, recognizing the fundamental right of a free press to keep the public informed.

On occasion, the actions of some involved in covering “high profile persons” has created challenges for those responsible for policing and those whose job it is to provide media coverage.  While the Department is committed to working with the media, police officers will protect the public by enforcing any and all laws.

The Los Angeles Police Department will respond to public complaints and criminal behavior in order to protect public safety.  Despite recent media reports, the LAPD is not “targeting” specific individuals or groups of individuals involved in covering “high profile persons.”

If you have any questions, please contact Lieutenant Ruben De La Torre, Officer-In-Charge LAPD Media Relations Section, at 213-485-3586.

Who cares if you're going after the paparazzi that's chasing Britney was it... they should all be targeted just like you target a bunch of teens running lights for any other reason.

It's surprising, but welcoming, that law enforcement has finally started taking a stand towards addressing the blatant violations of the "stalkarazzi", by sending the message tht just because media and tabloid photographers require candid snapshots of celebrities to get paid, that does not make them above the law as far as reckless driving and excessive speeding are concerned. The recent arrests of four photographers speeding while chasing while chasing Britney Spears' cars, in the Beverly Hills and San Fernando areas, with their cars, just to snap a picture of her-are a recent example. Celebrities and other high profile persons have the same privacy rights as other citizens do. No wonder Britney seems so stressed out! She cannot go to Starbucks, court or to get gas at a gas tation, without being mobbed by a mob of photographers following and photograping her every move, and in a way, it's a form of stalking. Other celebrities have experienced the same frustration, and it definetly becomes a public safety issue on the road for everyone, when the celebrities being chased trying to get away from these photographers become so distracted, they cannot focus on their driving-and can easily get into an accident. The way Princess Diana was killed (in France),in a fatal car accident, while her chauffer was trying to elude the paparazzi, is one example. These chasee/chaser scenarios become a vicious cycle of reckless driving on the highways, also endangering the lives of innocent people. No one should be allowed to recklessly endanger others on or off the highways, just to get that one picture-risking a life for it is just not worth it. These photo fanatics need to understand that not even they are above the law.
