• Police Commission President Anthony Pacheco participated in a ride along in the Hollywood Area and met with the Lieutenant from the Gang Enforcement Detail. He also attended a task force on cruising.
• Police Commissioner John Mack announced a press conference sponsored by the United States Conference of Mayors was held at the Democratic National Convention which focused on public safety issues.
• Police Chief William Bratton announced that all Bureaus report declines in Part I crime. He noted for the summer months of June, July, and August there were 84 homicides reported; the lowest amount of homicides since the summer of 1967. He also stated not since August of 1970, has the month of August reported fewer homicides.
• A presentation was made by the Police Commission and Police Chief William Bratton to Commander Richard Webb of the Internal Affairs Division of Professional Standards Bureau in recognition of his hard work in developing the Categorical Use of Force directive.
• The Department’s report, dated August 13, 2008, relative to the Hollywood Area Gang Enforcement Detail Command Accountability Performance as presented by Captain Beatrice Girmala was approved.
• The Department’s report, dated August 13, 2008, relative to the Transmittal of the Los Angeles County Fiscal Year 2008/09 Real Estate Fraud Prosecution Grant Program, was approved.
• The Department’s report, dated August 14, 2008, relative to the Van Nuys Area Gang Enforcement Detail Command Accountability Performance Audit (AD No. 08-056), as presented by Captain James Miller was approved.
• The Department’s report, dated August 14, 2008, relative to the West Los Angeles Area Gang Enforcement Detail Command Accountability Performance Audit (AD No. 08-057), as presented by Captain William Eaton was approved.
• The Department’s report, dated August 14, 2008, relative to the Follow-Up Review on Timekeeping and Fair Labor and Standards Act Audit, July 2008, was approved.
• The Department’s report, dated August 20, 2008, relative to the Proposed Revision to Council-Approved Records Retention Schedule for Original/Official Records for Office of the Chief of Police, was approved and transmitted to the City Clerk, Records Management Officer.
• The Department’s report, dated August 22, 2008, relative to the Contract No. 80112360 to present the Robert Presley Institute of Criminal Investigation (ICI) Core Recommendations for Board action was approved and transmitted to the Office of the Mayor.
• The Department’s report, dated August 28, 2008, relative to the Police Commissioners’ request regarding a status update on Department’s Community Relations Efforts, as presented by Captain William Scott was approved. Captain Scott informed the Commission that his office created a Community Relations resource guide for the Department. Part of the process involved videotaping members of the community discussing their opinions of what they expect of their police department. He noted the guide provides basic information in which other divisions may add to.
• The Department’s report, dated August 14, 2008, relative to the Department’s Quarterly Discipline Report, Second Quarter, 2008, was received and the Office of the Inspector General was directed to submit an analysis of the report along with any appropriate recommendations to the board.
