Sunshine Kids
September 11, 2024
Today the Los Angeles Police Department honored twenty seven Sunshine Kids at the Sheraton Universal Hotel for the fourth year. “Sunshine Kids” are children that are affected with various degrees of cancer. Despite all they go through day after day the kids felt like movie stars when they walked down the red carpet to receive their honorary LAPD police badge.
Assistant Chief Jim McDonnell welcomed the children as they took front stage. Chief McDonnell stated “Nobody ever calls the police when things are going well, it’s when things are upside down and someone’s world is inside out; they call you to come out and fix it. We see an awful lot of negative, so to be able to participate in a day like today where it’s all positive and to see people like yourself who have the courage that you have, it’s a great feeling.”
The children were given an honorary ID, badge and a handmade quilt made by volunteers. After the ceremony the kids were transported by LAPD Reserve Officer’s code-3 to Raleigh Studios. They viewed a screening of the “closer” and finished the day off with lunch.
I've been there every year since it started and I'm amazed at the positive effect it has on these young people. Special thanks to Sgt Morales and R/O Dave Bush for their behind the scene organizational skills.
Too bad these type of events don't get more media coverage!
