Recently, a homeless man in front of downtown’s Yankee Hotel fell out of his wheelchair onto the sidewalk. Struggling and unable to get himself back into the chair, the man refused help, even after Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics were called to the scene.
SRO Housing Corporation Program Manager Virginia Reed witnessed the entire event from across the street. As she discussed what happened with the paramedics, two Central Division officers arrived to offer assistance. “The [officers’] approach and the way they talked to him was very humane, and they were totally able to convey they wanted to help him,” said Reed. After the officers spoke with the man, he agreed to allow the paramedics to take him to the hospital. Reed added that she pretty much measures all LAPD officers from her observations of how officers working skid row interact with the homeless community.
“Getting him to agree to go to the hospital may have been the one thing that is going to save this man’s life,” said Reed. Thank you and the other great LAPD officers who serve the skid row community with such dignity, respect and caring.”
